The design for this house explores the traditional Irish house type, the ‘House of the Middle Size’. The proposed house is sited at the edge of the existing field commanding the picturesque landscape beyond as is typical of this classic house type. The subtly asymmetrical boardmarked concrete shell belies a complex section of complete rooms reminiscent of the raumplan. This open matrix of rooms creates a spatial complexity and richness through borrowed views and implied connections. The distinctly contemporary house seeks to develop a line of continuity with the building culture of the countryside by conversing with the buildings around it, the historic construction of the region and the site on which it is located.
