This house is a remaking of an existing detached house where the ambition was to retain as much of the original structure as possible to reduce the environmental impact while completely remaking the overall aesthetic.  The first floor, mainly roof, was largely replaced while the ground floor and basement were retained forming the overall framework for the new design.  The concrete basement walls provided an opportunity to structure the new roof with two columns rising from ground to two beams at roof level with walls stepping and bending to form niches for these figural elements.  Where these columns meet the roof it was removed to create two dramatic rooflights at the centre of the house.  Externally the house is organised around stepping brick volumes nested into a series of covered porches.  The stepping theme operates at the detail level as well where notched corners create shadowed edges and an ambiguity between the solidity and planarity of the brick skin.  The overall atmosphere is one of layered frames, textured surfaces, and pooled light.
